Jennifer Smith and Ben Summers co-founded ONEIS in 2007; a system which enables small businesses to manage information effectively.  With decades of experience in IT and information management, they were the perfect duo to create bespoke solutions to meet the complex requirements of SMEs.  However 'techy' they were, and however great the system, Ben and Jennifer were not sales people. Their approach to selling was pretty ad-hoc and they were in need of expert sales help to ensure the company grew to the scale it deserved.  Enter Pitching for Management! 

 

The experience of Pitching for Management

Ben met Modwenna Rees-Mogg, founder CEO of AngelNews and Pitching for Management at an entrepreneurial event, and when she explained the concept, Ben instantly grasped its value. 

"It was very low risk; a day or so preparing the pitch and a nominal fee. In the worst case scenario I would raise awareness of my business in a room full of well-connected people" Ben explained.  He pitched at a London event in September 2010 and had a range of people interested in his business and offering advice.  One person stood out: Mark Needham came forward and said he would like to help and was impressed with the product demonstration.  They met once a month for four months after the event, where Mark became a sounding board for ONEIS, talking through developments, sales strategies and solutions, offering tips and advice on a range of issues.  Mark then became an NED for the business in exchange for a small monthly fee and the promise of further opportunities. 

 

New NED increased sales

They quickly established that due to the complex nature of the product, cold calling was not a productive sales approach.  The best way to sell their product was via word of mouth, networking and demonstrations.  ONEIS became more business-like, commercial and sales savvy in a matter of months.  Since Pitching for Management and Mark's appointment as NED, sales have increased and ONEIS is now a well-known product in the SME market.
