Tim Chater, Co-founder of KOJI Drinks, pitched in London and Bristol to find a Financial Director. Hear about his story…

 

 

"We have developed, and now manufacture, a new natural, low-in-calorie- soft drink brand called KOJI. We wanted to create a healthy and sophisticated soft drink for grown-ups that was an alternative to sugary drinks. The challenge for us was to do this without compromising on quality or taste. It’s inspired by an ancient Japanese method of infusion, using intriguing blends of fruit; spices and herbs to create invigorating refreshments that help relax the mind, soothe the soul and cleanse the body. We first got the idea for KOJI when in a bar in Germany where we found a low calorie, all natural non-alcoholic drink and we thought it was a great idea that would really take off in the UK.


My background, and that of my business partner, Luke Sapsed, is in FMCG and Food & Drinks Manufacturing. We knew there was a gap in the market, and so we set about developing our own production methods (highly secret!) and our brand. We are able to retain the flavour and nutritional properties of our ingredients. After careful filtering, we are left with a wonderfully pure and exceptionally low calorie drink. No sweeteners are needed, or added; just gentle bubbles and good-for-you prebiotics.


We started the business with just 2 of us, but as the products took off we felt we needed to recruit an investing Financial Director. Having attended Pitching for Management events before as an audience member, I knew that the quality of the audience would allow us to meet the right people so with a little convincing from Modwenna we decided to pitch in Bristol. The event itself went really well and I received some useful feedback about my ideas. On the night we spoke to 3 angels and 4 potentials FDs which we thought was a really positive outcome.


Three years on and I still often recommend Pitching for Management events to people as the need to network with people face to face is essential – both for raising awareness of your brand and for growing your team."
