The story of Aspyre

River Tamoor-Baig pitched at our Nottingham event in July 2012 for a mentor after his first venture didn't work out. Read about his new success....

"Aspyre is a unique suite of resources (including an interactive website, tablet applications, events & online store) for young people interested in creating their own job. Aspyre is the digital medium that aims to bring self-belief into young people by providing them with the knowledge and inspiration they need to go out and achieve their ambitions. Essentially giving them the tools they need to become job creators and not job seekers.

Aspyre started off with the inevitable failure of our previous start up S1 Magazine. Whilst running S1, I became heavily involved within the local and national entrepreneur community. Because of this I began reading more and more business related content online - however I felt none of it was directly targeted towards people like myself; a young entrepreneur, with little experience & capital but with massive amounts of determination & passion.

This lead to the creation of Aspyre which is specifically designed to fill that need, and when we launched we had 4 people within the team. Because the business was still in its concept phase, we realise that before we could go any further we needed experienced managers/mentors to help us in finalising the concept and move us along to the developmental stages.

We heard about P4M through the Angel News Network website. The actual decision to pitch was a last minute decision. I didn't even have a presentation - actually ended up doing it on the train ride to the event!

What convinced me was really the fact that I knew I wouldn't have another opportunity to talk about my idea in front of 30/40 highly experienced people. I thought to myself 'what's the worst that could happen? Absolutely nothing.’

The event was very interesting. The other entrepreneurs had rock solid ideas, great value propositions and even better business models whilst all I had was an idea. However, I certainly did receive the most positive feedback and had a good dozen people approach me afterwards offering me advice and assistance.

I walked away with at least 5/6 very solid contacts - although the contacts couldn't help me directly they did mention that they knew other people who would be very interested in helping.  Through the contacts I made at P4M I managed to secure two very strong mentors - one which is helping with project management whilst another is helping with commercial development.

My experience with P4M was great. I met a lot of great people and had a pleasant evening and I genuinely believe Aspyre wouldn't have made the colossal amount of progress it has unless we had met our mentors. They've played an integral part in developing the business and have helped us take our initial concept and make it into a viable business.

They've accelerated our production and we're aiming to have the website live by early December."

"Through Pitching for Management, we found one of our core team in an evening. I can't think of another way this could possibly have happened so swiftly."
